Tonight's dinner: Scorpion + silkworm + fried crab on a stick
Yum? It wasn't super god or bad. The scorpions were small and skewered. They deep fried it real quick and sprinkled salt on it before I threw them one at a time into my mouth. It tasted like a extra oily potato chip.
The silkworm was also fried but no salt. It tasted like burnt chicken.
The crab was just battered a bit and deep fried. Then the lady rubbed some hot chili paste on it and gave it to me. It tasted pretty good, like soft shelled crab.
I washed it all down with a pepsi and then got some dumplings and fried noodle to finish it off.
I found this stuff at a night food market area close to my hostel. I wish other people were there with me. I wanted to try the large scorpions, the snake, and the crickets but I needed more peer pressure.

sounds like the show Fear Factor, you should get on that show if it's still around
Jim, so it sounds like you are having a time of your life. Have you thought about what you are going to gain from all of this by May of 2009? You'll be home then and back to reality. I think it's really great that you are doing this, it takes courage and a completely open mind to embrace the world (literally). Reading about all the places in the world and able to be there in person is a real privilege. It is great that you see yourself as a representative of the US since most people think of Americans as rude, loud, and obnoxious which I think is not far from the truth of the majority. Perhaps you can share your adventure with people and make a living out of it when you come home. Can't wait till see pictures of the pyramids.
have you tried the kfc ice cream cone in beijing?!? it's the best; can't find that in USA. ALSO, make sure you go the 100 different kind of dumpling place....tell yan to take you since it's a little hard to find.
i can't wait to see your pix.
hey jim! i went to beijing in september and i tried the scorpion too. the salt and the oil makes up for it being a scorpion. i also had a mushu wrap, i wanted to try a starfish but i ran out of yuan in my pocket.
if you go around wanfujiang again, you have to go to haagen-daz. it's like a little cafe in there. and their green tea ice cream is the best!!
ben - there's no way i could do fear factor. i couldn't get myself to chew on cow nuts or something seriously disgusting like that. thanks for the great words of encouragement. I hope to be smarter and wiser and more well rounded when i get home. I will get some badass pictures of the pyramids. I hope to do a hot air balloon ride over them or something like that.
hui - yan took me to the 100 dumpling place, well actually i ordered from there myself and did takeout then ate them with her in my hostel dining area :)
kandice - I never made it into a haagen daaz :( i'll see if i can get there before i leave china
